This video discusses one of the key components to shooting a basketball. The “off” or “guide” hand is a concept that many players struggle with. Over the course of our basketball playing and coaching careers we have observed many players doing strange things with their off hand. The guide hand is used for guidance on the basketball in order to obtain control and balance on the ball. It is only used for guidance or assistance on the ball. When the flicking motion of the wrist begins in the shot your guide hand must be “locked” into place in order to minimize the interference with the shot and to maximize shooting accuracy. In our program, we teach that all of your fingers should be pointing straight up on your guide hand when shooting. Additionally, you should be able the view the palm of your guide hand when you are shooting. This video discusses many of the do’s and dont’s of the guide hand.
